Tribute to Auden

Ruthin Exhibition of Lettering. Oct 2019 Photo: Dewi Tannatt Lloyd and Ruthin Craft Centre.

An expressive portrait of Auden sits on a plinth with raised text. The wording is a stanza from the poem ‘The More Loving One’.

The question   How should we like it were stars to burn with a passion for us we could not return   sits below the statement   If equal affection cannot be let the more loving one be me

The quotation feels emblematic of Auden’s largeness of heart, and the fate of the principal relationship in his life.

Cast plaster head. Plinth cast in Crystacal, a hard plaster.
